Flädlesuppe

Gross Gott!
So going along the lines of my previous post, I had to make one of my fav soups ever! It is a traditional soup made in the Baden-Württemberg by the Swabian. The soup consists of the pfannkuchen cut into strips and the put into broth and topped with chives. This soup always makes me feel soo good and is a total comfort when I am sick. I know it sounds weird to put cut up crepes in soup, but they are like a softer noodle. It is so good and simple. One of the first things I learned to make when I was a kid. LOVE IT!

As a side note, my dad made the drink next to the soup, it was water with some lemon slices and cut up fresh raspberries. Also pretty darn tasty.

Well, that is all for now,
Happy eatings!

Cooking with my Oma

Guten Tag!!

Today was my first installment of learning some of my grandmother's cooking. My mother's side is all German, so we made some German food. I learned how to make  her red cabbage and pfannkuchen (crepes). Good old German comfort food <3
Starting my red cabbage (next time I was told I have to cook the bacon then add the onions)

 Added the cabbage and seasoning

After cooking down. YUM! we used a little too much vinegar and I needed to chop/fry my bacon a little more.

This was the begining of the pfannkuchen, all mixed and runny

One of my first to fry- a lot easier to cook than what I thought

My plate full!!! not too bad for my first time :)

My next visit I will make her kartoffelsalat (potato salad). YUM!

What is your fav comfort food you grew up on?

Prost!

Critic V- Long Horn Steakhouse

Howdy y'all,

So tonight I went on a date with my boyfriend. I had a gift certificate to the corporation that owns Long Horn, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, ect, so we decided we wanted Long Horn. Let me tell you, AMAZING!!! Worth all the money we spent.

We started with their Firecracker Chicken Wraps. It was so yummy! The wraps were perfectly crispy and had just the right amount of heat, and the avocado lime dipping sauce was perfect. So great!

For my entree, I had the Flat Iron Steak with a Cheese Filled Protabella Mushroom. The steak had a wonderful gravy/sauce over it with a Parmesan cheese filling. My side was the asparagus with lemon garlic sauce. I have to say the food was better here than the fancy steak house down the street called Gino's. So not worth the money there. I would pay the prices at Gino for Long Horn meals any day.

My BF had the rainbow trout with the baked sweet potato. His fish was flaky and seasoned perfectly. The sweet potato was falling off the skin and had a cinnamon sugar topping with butter. We were both in heaven the entire meal.

I would give the restaurant 5/5. I could not be happier.

Sorry no pics. Have a great night!
Happy eating,

Minnesota fun: Pudgie pies and crab boil.

Hello all!! I just got back from an awesome 5 day trip to northern Minnesota, West Two campground to be precise. I haven't been up there in years, and boy have I missed it. My BF got to go for the first time and caught his first northern ( a nice 26"!!). My uncle even taught him how to fillet it.

In family tradition of sorts, you can't go camping without at least making one pudgie pie. For those who do not know what a pudgie pie is, it is two slices of white bread with pie filling in the middle that is toasted in a metal pie contraption in the fire. They are indulgent HEAVEN!!! As I learned from my family, one of my cousins has been experimenting with just about anything...I can't wait to try to make pizza in it. So this trip I made one with cherry pie filling and a couple of marshmallows. SO GOOD! My B.F.'s was just cherry pie filling...still all the yummy.

The last photo was of a crab boil a group of locals invited us to. they were in the site next to us and came over asking if they were going to be to loud and what time my parents were planning on going to bed. They said they were having the boil and for us to come down and join them....so we did lol. They had king crab, snow crab, craw dads, shrimp, scallops, octopus, and the veggies. It was soooo good. I want to do another so bad. One of the best trips EVER!!!

So that is all for my MN vaca. What is your fav camping food?? In upcoming entries I will be recaping a few meals we have made in the past month or so including strawberry pie, mango salsa, and other goodies.

Happy eating Y'all!!

Lemon Raspberry Cupcakes/ Lemon-Basil

Wow, it has been forever since i have posted food. I have had some crazy things happen cooking lately. Tuesday I made a bunch of cupcakes for the 4th of July. I made lemon and lemon-basil cupcakes with a raspberry frosting. It was amazing. I got the recipe here. Very easy and very yummy. If you have checked out the link, you will notice that there is no mention of basil in the recipe...that was my own brilliant idea. Also, because Aldi didn't have raspberries at the time I substituted blue berries instead of raspberry toppers, and no red food coloring.

Here are a few things I would do different for the cupcakes/frosting:
1- more basil. I was afraid to use too much, so I used a few sprigs of mini basil and three leaves chopped in half of the batter. Definitely could have used more.
2- my dear friend Dani said basil in the frosting- also an amazing idea i have to try
3- my mom suggested a thin layer of the raspberry preserved that is in the frosting on the cupcakes before adding the frosting...so cake-preserves-frosting.
4- MAKE MORE! lol

But the recipe was great on its own. Def try it!

So, What was your fav thing to eat on the Fourth of July this year?
Mine was actually a drink my aunt made of bear/pink lemonade/ and vodka. So good.
I will be posting more soon! Happy eatings,
Smashley :)
